I SPEAK YOU

Interactive Digital Installation (2008)

Nominated for Arte Laguna Art Prize, Venice, Italy (Virtual Art Category), 2012

I Speak You is an interactive digital installation that explores the idea of translation in the globalised world. Words in English ‘Hello Welcome Home We Hope You Feel Comfortable’ are cut up and translated in Swiss-German and Hindi. Nine pairs of video clips are arranged on opposite walls; a pair across two languages plays at a time. The pairs ‘hop’ according to the viewers’ location between the wall-mounted projections. The frames switch in response to viewer’s movement. This random, mapped ‘shifting’, in real time, presents a video-voice jumble that becomes a visual, lingual and spatial puzzle for viewers to comprehend.
