MEHROON
Musical Theatre
MEHROON is a tale of insatiable desires, of deceit, of unbridled fantasies, of dreaded curses. A musical play on the beauty and profundity of being in a state of longing, MEHROON is the story of turning the meaning of the color maroon — and of love itself — on its head.
When did you first fall in love? When did you last fall in love? Do you often fall in love? Why is everyone is so shy about love? Why do we love watching movies on love? What did your father say about love? And your grandmother? Why do only poets talk so much about love? Do we fall or rise in love? How far is longing from love? How near does love sit with desire? Desire is instant, but is love instant too? What about longing? For how long does one need to desire for it to become a longing? How intense does longing need to be for it become ancient time?
MEHROON narrates a poignant tale of love and longing. Having lost everything, a grieving woman attempts to start life again with a handful of wet earth and an innate gift to make her creations come alive. Ingeniously linking inner and outer lives, fantasy and reality, night and day, this play is a love story, a mystery, a ghost story, and a modern folk tale. The narrative weave is spun by an elusive chorus of actor-singers, who follow a woman’s journey consumed by her love and desire. This suspenseful tale explores the vagaries of the heart and the implacability of circumstances in a highly original construction, and even though the tale unfolds as a tragedy, it is life-affirming to its core. MEHROON is a profound understanding of India's ageless and ever-changing society.
